Mahes Hettige Head of Balance Sheet Management for Bank of New Zealand
Professionally Mahes hold the position of Head of Balance Sheet Management for Bank of New Zealand, second largest bank in NZ. A role that involves managing BNZ’s balance sheet strength, funding & liquidity strategy, and interest rate risk.
Mahes has extensive Treasury Management experience covering international & domestic market funding and funds management experience gained over 35 years in Corporate, Banking, Treasury and Risk management, holding senior management roles for a variety of NZ organisations. Mahes has had an active role in building capital markets in New Zealand with the establishment of first NZ covered bonds and many funding & capital initiatives in international & domestic capital markets for NZ organisations. Mahes has extensive experience on offshore & domestic funding, capital structuring & execution for NZ corporate and bank balance sheets.
Prior to his current role at BNZ, Mahes worked at Westpac Banking Corporation as the Senior Manager Funding and Capital Structure and at two State Owned Enterprises: Deputy Treasurer at Electricity Corporation of NZ, Treasurer at Housing NZ, and also worked in Local Government as Funds Manager at Auckland City.
Mahes is a Fellow NZ Corporate Treasurer & Fellow of the Institute of Finance Professionals of NZ (INFINZ), holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration with Honours from Victoria University, Wellington and is a Chartered Accountant of CharteredAccountants Australia and NZ and was recently awarded recognition for 40 years membership for this professional group. Mahes is also Wellington Committee member of NZ Asian Leaders group.
